Usually failsafe is set on the RX side, and FrSky receivers definitely have a failsafe.

I don't own a Turnigy 9x or 9xr so I can't help ya there much, but if you got the bare FrSky module that doesn't have a case I'm sure you could cram it in the TX.
push the envelope, watch it bend

No mods needed. I use the 9XR radio with the FrSky djt accst module. It plugs right in. Slightly tight because at the base of the antenna.

Like Sicarus wrote last year, if you don't have a usbasp programmer, get one of those, too, so you can update the stock firmware to one of the others, such as er9x (what I use).

The 9xr is okay to use, but its gimbals are pretty lousy. Mine originally needed a little shaving on the mechanism to let the sticks actually return to 0, and then secondly, they cause a little cross talk, and electronically still never actually recenter correctly.

A couple weekends ago, my brother and I performed some surgery, swapped out gimbals for the new Taranis replacements. This required physical modifications to the radio itself. The new gimbals are a huge improvement - but, wouldn't necessarily recommend this upgrade for everyone, as it results in a non-perfect cosmetically looking product. My sticks center now, and keep position.

That is great news zakerny. Thank you all for the quick response. I will definitely be buying the usbasp programmer as well.
