Next Level 800 hex

I worked with Lucien miller, innov8tive designs, and Randy moody, RC dude hobbies, with the creation of my DARPA bird. Been talking with them and their design of a GoPro and a DSLR gimbal that will just bolt onto their frames and was asked if I would help them test it out. I said sure and got a custom 800mm hex made up and sent out. Finally got it completed and flying and it's awesome, Very rigid and lightweight. Here's are the current specs.

NL800 hex
Cobra 2820/14 motors (same ones I used on my DARPA bird)
NL 40amp speed controllers with Simon K firmware
Gem fan wood 12x4 props
DJI naza with GPS
Gaui crane 2 gimbal (will soon be replacing the stock servos with savox ones)
Gopro 3 black
1 watt 1.3ghz video transmitter
Batteries I'm still playing around with 3S and 4S

At full throttle on 4S this bird will produce 30lbs of thrust. More then enough for the amount of batteries and the canon rebel ill be flying once they send me the bigger gimbal.

Will you have an external (separate) controller for the gimbal? I think that would be desirable.

Ill see how the naza controller does with the gimbal, right now it's ok, but if I'm not liking it then yes ill get a separate gimbal controller.

I wouldn't rely on it if you want full control and flexibility... I'm quite interested in alternatives to the regular RC servo's we're using (was reading the thread about the BLDC motors used the other day).

I really want to use brushless motors for the gimbal control, just waiting for the someone to upload the firmware to control the motors then ill make my own gimbal using brushless motors.

First video/photo shoot with the new 800hex and it works perfectly. This is a picture from above the veterans memorial across from Lambeau Field in Green Bay. Wind was perfect to get the flag going with the stadium in the background. Was shot with a GoPro 3 Black edition, hard part was every time i hit the shutter button, black comes with a wifi remote, the video would cut out. So i had to frame it with my FPV gear get a good GPS hold then hit the button because my goggles would go black for about a second then come back. Worked out pretty well though once i got a hang of it.

Looks very nice! How will you handle the shutter witb the real camera later? I guess that one too can output live composite video and that it too freezes while you operate the shutter...

I'll just do the same thing, make sure have a good GPS lock before the shot. Also I've done a dual pilot shoot, someone flew I took pics, and it was hardly noticeable when the shutter went and I have a faster camera then the one we used.
