Do you have an AQ Shield? All of the shields are labeled, motor 1 ESC cable plugs into motor 1 on shield, receiver throttle channel to throttle on shield, etc. Just look at the labels to see which way the cable goes, white or yellow are generally signal, black or brown are gnd or - on the shields.
If you don't have a shield, we'll need to know what Arduino you're using.
im using the 2.1 shield + arduino kit
Have you reviewed the build instructions on the wiki? This page shows the process to put the shield together and the shield should be labeled for the motor and receiver pins. http://aeroquad.com/showwiki.php?tit...bly+2+1+Shield

yes I looked at it. But is there a specific order I need to put the motor pins in and does anything go into the reciever?
The row of pins marked "RECEIVER" go to your receiver. They're labeled appropriately.
There's a wiki here labeled "Flight Configurations" that explains motor order.

wicked! ... and 1 more thing. I want the quad in an X configuration and there are 2 ways to set up the motors. Which one do I pick?
If you are talking about "OLD_MOTOR_NUMBERING", don't use it unless you are lazy and upgrading from 2.5 (like me). The motor config without it is 1 is top left, 2 is top right, 3 is bottom right, and 4 is bottom left.
Please read the Flight Configurations wiki. It does a great job explaining everything.
