Shoebox Quad

I didn't think I was going to have time for this, but I crashed myself yesterday and now have a suspected ACL injury. I am (maybe was) a ski instructor. Because I'm full of painkillers I'll limit myself to just posting some photo's I took while making my quad.

Plywood frame was light and stiff but is now unusable after 3-4 hard crashes

The homemade shiled... 6dof and xbee fit beside each other perfectly
was going to use a pro mini but because of problem modifying aref used a 2009
maybe the mini will be a daughter bourd for other sensors
nylon bolts (with a layer of servo grommet) secure arduino with silcon (leftover from stripping wire) jammed under the unsecured corners

The accel and gyros (red 6dof board) pretty close to center but higher than I'd like

the cardboard rolls absorbed the soft crashes (landings?) well but useless in big crashes
I mounted the motors so they could be moved and not drill the aluminium
they are 56cm apart because 56 trombones lead the big parade
I use a lot of cable ties

ready for first flight (er flip) extending the frame beyond the motors has saved lots of props
make good handles when tuning - incredable how solid it feels when set up right
and it feels slightly less scarey when it's close and the motors are going

I'm calling this a successful landing the ground was so soft the aluminium went in 3-4cm

There's just me so I don't have any pictures in the air and there have been no dead calm days
I definatley need more time on the simulator and a better way of marking front from back
have managed a 3-4 minute flight hovering and out and back 20 meters
Tried uping the pid but got oscilationn at 7 was coming back down when I had fatal frame crash at 6.5
RAZOR 6DOF on 4x still has caps on 6dof and shield

increadably satisfing project can't wait to get a new frame organised

ciao

    Awesome looking build. Nicely done.

Too bad about the crash. Lets hope the next frame is just as nice :-)

    thanks for the encouragement

I see you've designed a completely wood (here)

Do you know about this Competition I reckon your frame and aeroquad would qualify

Great promo opportunity and maybe a prize

Hi New frame ended up as acrylic squares with just enough holes for bolts and some cable ties
I had the acrylic already so was a real quick and dirty fix
I've broken 4 Nylon bolts in crashes... they seem to protect the acrylic quite well so far

Been playing with heading hold but the drift is making it more hindrance than help

Had a good 40mins flying time before a crash broke a motor bearing out of the mount
Getting more simulator time while waiting for the winds to die
I live at the base of a volcano the winds can be very gusty and set in for days
probably a good thing... I'm not a great pilot
    yet
